A New Yorker in Brownsville, TX

A long way from home.

If you asked me 10 years ago if I had ever heard of Brownsville, I would’ve said yes, but I would have been referring to the one here in New York.

New York is all I’ve ever known, until six years ago when I joined Latinx Voces at its inception- back when it was solely the Task Force. For the past six years, I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside the team to bring programming, workshops, and other opportunities for collaboration to the community.

I finally visited Brownsville, TX during one of our annual retreats, where I got to spend time with the team and experience the community firsthand. Since then, Brownsville has come to mean collaboration, opportunity, and ideas to me. It’s a place where ideas get started, like our Skills for Community Impact series and the VOCES Health Summit.

So, I invite you to come to Brownsville. Come with colleagues, or come alone and network. Meet other people in the field, brainstorm ideas, ask questions, and maybe even start the initial conversation about that big project you’ve been thinking about.

For those of you who are out of town, I invite you to do just that and explore Brownsville if and when you have the opportunity. If the VOCES Health Summit is on your mind, this is your sign to attend.

Although I am far away from home, I’ve been able to enjoy some of the local gems that make Brownsville special. Frijoles charros I can’t get back home, a snow cone from Nery’s, enjoying a taquiza with the team, and even a quick escape to the beach in South Padre Island. This place has a way of welcoming you in. –

Come for the summit. Stay for the community. Go a long way from home and discover something new.

See you in a month!

Connection in Brownsville

Frijoles charros, big ideas, new connections, and a community that welcomes you in. A New Yorker’s take on why going a long way from home can lead somewhere unexpected… and why the VOCES Health Summit is a good reason to make the trip.
