Brownsville, by Design

When people think of a National Summit, which cities come to mind? New York City? Los Angeles? Houston? Miami? And of course that would be the case! These are huge and amazing cities! And they are also the most likely place for a national convening. 

So now let’s take it step further. When people think of Texas, what locations do they think about? They think about Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Houston… right? 

But a summit that is talking about health equity, innovation, and creative collaboration, why would we choose South Texas? When you think of South Texas, do you think of cities like San Antonio and Corpus Christi? 

Guess again! 

We’re talking about the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), specifically the tippy tip of Texas and the RGV in Brownsville, TX!

Born and raised in Brownsville, I know far too well that Brownsville is often forgotten or simply put to the side. But after decades of incredible growth, expansion, and investment in health, wellness, and development, the city does not look the same as it did a couple of decades ago.

That is exactly what makes it perfect for a summit like this. 

When talking about health equity, we are focused on addressing the communities that are often forgotten or put to the side. If we recall the creative innovations and best practices that emerged from the COVID pandemic, thinking outside of the box was the name of the game.

When talking about creative collaborations with cultural and historical roots of our history and ancestors, Brownsville encapsulates that perfectly. 

This summit is meant to do more than just talk about strengthening health outcomes, it’s meant to show what that can look like.

Doesn’t it make sense to put on a summit like this in a city that is in the middle of that very journey we are hoping to showcase? 

So yes, Brownsville may be an unlikely host city.

But its nature, history, culture, growth and community are what make it the perfect host city for this National Summit.
